Next door neighbors to the British Virgin Islands the U.S. islands are a great place to start your vacation. Populated with approx 60,000 people St. Thomas is the shopping capital and a great place to fly in to. From there it's easy to stop by secluded bays on Great St. James and the National Park of St. John. These bays have excellent snorkeling, white sandy beaches and very few boats. St. John's Cruz Bay is a great place to shop for unique gifts or just to have a drink at "Woody's" or "The Beach Bar"
TORTOLA is the largest island of the British Virgin Islands and has about 19,000 people. Soper's Hole is a great spot to grab a "Painkiller" at Pussers and see where the pirates used to hang out. Sage Mountain is a rewarding hike from beautiful Cane Garden Bay and has breathtaking views of the island chain. Dolphin Discovery is here where you can spend the afternoon swimming with the dolphins. Tortola is the place to be for the night of the full moon. Bomba Shack has a famous party on the west side of the island; there is also dancing all night long at Trellis Bay on Beef Island, just to the east.
NORMAN ISLAND, Also called Treasure Island, is a great spot to relax or party. It also has some of the best snorkel spots in the BVI. After snorkeling the caves where treasure was once found, it is fun to stop by The Bight for drinks at the famous floating bars, William Thorton (Willie T.) For a fun beach bar, stop at Pirates. Behind is a trail which is a nice hike to the top. Another anchorage on the uninhabited Norman Island in Benures Bay. It is quiet and secluded and a great place to see some tropical fish and turtles.
PETER ISLAND features the aptly-name Peter Island Resort, which is a wonderful place to see all the different plants native to the island. It has amazing landscaping and a newly renovated spa so you can enjoy the afternoon getting pampered. Spending a day on the beach at Deadman's Bay is always a favorite. The anchorage in Great Harbor or Little Harbor are both great places to spend time kayaking, snorkeling or diving.
MARINA CAY invites you to lay on the beach, swim, snorkel or take a short walk around this 13 acre island. It is the quaintest island in the BVI and home to Pusser's Restuarant and Gift Shop, a Happy Hour Bar and a Dive Shop. This is a great spot anytime but especially enjoyable at sunset when there is live music. When anchored near Marina Cay there is an excellent reef on the island of Great Cameno that you can snorkel to, right off the back of the boat.
VIRGIN GORDA, also called the fat virgin, has so much to see. You can first spend a day at The Baths, which are a formation of boulders you can hike and swim through with white sandy beaches nestled in between.
This island is a great place to take an island tour. There is an old Copper Mine to see and then, driving out of the valley, head up to the Gorda peak to find the best views of the North Sound on the other side of the island. The islands to the south are Mosquito, Prickly Pear, Saba Rock and the Bitter End. In the sound, also called the Bitter End, there are many spots to explore. Leverick Bay Marina has beach BBQ on Friday night, Saba Rock is another tiny island to visit and of course the Bitter End Yacht Club has everything one could want: spa, pool, pub, water toys and live music many nights.
ANEGADA is two to three hour sail northwest of Virgin Gorda. Anegada has the most unspoiled beaches and shallow turquoise water on the North shore. Interestingly, it is the only island in the chain that was not formed by a volcano, so you cannot really see it on approach. Nightly the restaurants grill lobster and have parties right on the beach, and is considered the best place for Caribbean lobster! It is an experience not to miss.
JOST VAN DYKE is home to White Bay and the famous beach bars Soggy Dollar Bar, Ivans, and One Love. This is the best spot for a day of sun, fun and watching boats come and go. It has one of the longest beaches around with fine white sand. Come and drink "Painkillers" on the beach! At night anchored in Great Harbor the food, drinks and dancing is at Foxy's. It is also the place to be on New Years Eve, hosting one of the largest New Year's parties in the Caribbean. Don't miss Friday night BBQ with fresh fish, ribs and chicken! Main Street here is sand and it is an inviting place to stroll along visiting the other establishments on Jost Van Dyke. Only 200 people live here, and it is fun to get to know the locals.
